Ford EcoBoost Engine Specifications and Performance Problems

What is Ford EcoBoost engine? Are there problems on its reliability and performance? Ford F-150 Explorer, Fusion, Fiesta and Mustang are also known to be applied by this family of engine on their latest generation. This new automotive technology is sometimes called as the turbocharged direct injection engine with variable camshafts and large diplacement, developed by FEV engineering, launched in 2011.

So what are benefits of using this petrol engine? It offers improvements of towing capacity,fuel efficiency (20%) and greenhouse emissions (about 15%). Therefore, more power and torque as well as controlled acceleration will be delivered consistently. That’s why this technology is called best choice for future car application whereas rising cost of gas fuel makes all vehicle manufactures focusing on fuel economy.

According to Wikipedia, EcoBoost I4 engine consists of two types: 1.6L and 2.0L version. It uses Twin independent Variable Camshaft Timing which is rated at 160hp. The tests and developments are still applied to validate the engine performance. Ford has made million hours of computer analysis and dyno tests for 100.000 hours in any climate conditions.

The specifications are observed that stated that valve lash on intakes and exhaust are 0.17 mm and 0.38 mm respectively with 0.12 mm end play of crankshaft and using 2 of 10 teeth of timing chain. There is no excessive wear on bearing.

It is reported that consumers complain about reliability and performance of engine particularly sharp reduction on reduction while driving in high acceleration and wet conditions.
